This chart was used for learning arithmetic and mathematics. Mrs. Lee and her children were taught at home when young. When they were old enough, they were sent to boarding schools at about eleven years of age. The Lees’ believed that the children should receive the best education available. Mrs. Custis also believed it was her Christian duty to educate the enslaved people of Arlington to prepare them for freedom.
