Santa Fe, United States

The "Arma Christi" (Latin for "Weapons of Christ" or "Instruments of Christ's Passion") refers to a collection of symbolic objects associated with the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. These items, often depicted in Christian art, represent the tools and elements involved in the Passion narrative, particularly from the trial to the crucifixion.

Folk art often has religious themes because it reflects the cultural and spiritual beliefs of the communities that create it. Religion has historically been a central aspect of daily life, shaping values, traditions, and rituals. Folk art, being a form of expression tied to community identity, often incorporates religious symbols, stories, and iconography as a way of communicating moral teachings, honoring deities or saints, and reflecting the collective spiritual life of a community.

In many cases, folk art is also produced for religious purposes, such as in the creation of altarpieces, devotional objects, or religious festivals. Additionally, because folk art is often made by people outside formal artistic traditions, it tends to represent a more personal, accessible, and often humble approach to religious themes, reflecting the artist's connection to their faith and community. It is also a way to preserve and transmit religious stories, beliefs, and practices across generations.
