This ceramic, Armadillo Effigy Jar was created between 300 - 500 CE by the Nicoya Culture located in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. The jar is painted with a red slip and the top shell of the armadillo is incised with geometric shapes. The jar is nearly spherical with the armadillo having four short legs, a small tail, and a head, with the opening of the jar coming out of the back of the armadillo.
