On September 15, 1963, members of the Ku Klux Klan detonated a bomb at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four young African American girls and injuring 22 other people. The event became a turning point of the Civil Rights Movement and led to increased support for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Reaction to the bombing was illustrated by memorials held nationwide. The armband displayed here is from a memorial held in New York soon after the tragic event.
