In the early 19th century, European and American interest in classical designs prompted the creation of fanciful copies of ancient furniture. Ancient Greek chairs called "klysmos" inspired the curving, animal-footed legs and sweeping back of this chair. Although such chairs were popular as side chairs in the United States, examples with arms are extremely rare.
