This armchair is thought to have been purchased for Chiswick House by the 5th Duke of Devonshire. It was made by one of the leading chair-makers in Paris, Jean-Baptiste Tilliard, who also supplied furniture to the French royal residences. It forms part of a larger set that were used throughout the first floor and in the now-demolished wing buildings.
