c. 1860–1910

Dallas Museum of Art
Dallas, United States

Garlands of flowers, swags, fluted columns, oval ornaments, and flame finials mark this exceptional chair. Although the maker is unidentified, the design and detailed carving suggest a New York City origin. New York was the fashion center of the U.S. and had an appreciation for the Louis XVI and Renaissance revival styles, which influenced the design of this chair. A related example is in the collection of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
