An armed merchant ship and other vessels are situated on water near a port city, possibly Dordrecht. In the center of the painting an armed Dutch three-master fires a salute to the starboard side. There are several crew members working on deck. On the left of the painting a wijdship is anchored for maintenance. From a raft on the starboard side, workmen are busy tarring the hull of the ship.
