About the craft: Madur, are mats woven in West Bengal from a reed called madurkathi, sedge of the family Cyperaceae. Madur mat-making is a long-standing tradition where the women of the hhouseholds are mainly involved. Origin of the Madur in West Bengal dates back to the Muslim period, when ‘Masland’ mats of superfine variety with fine cotton as weft were produced under royal patronage. Madur artists are found in Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts of West Bengal and contributes to the rural economy. Besides making mats the artists have diversified into making various utility items and accessories such as bags, folders, table mats, runners.
