Art cabinet

Italy?, mid-seventeenth century

Rockoxhuis

Rockoxhuis
Antwerp, Belgium

Art cabinets were made to hold all kinds of trinket, including jewellery, coin collections, documents, letters, etc., and are symbolic, perhaps, of the numerous curiosa collected by patricians. The front of this piece of furniture is designed as an architectural trompe l’oeil. The doors enclose drawers, one of which conceals a further, secret drawer behind it.
