Artemis and Hyperion

This picture is described in the manuscript catalogue of Watts’s work compiled by his wife as ‘A nature myth of the Greek poets, Hyperion representing the sun, and Artemis his sister, the moon, who loved the Titan Orion’. A crescent moon below the cloud at the bottom is now barely visible. Artemis’s languid pose suggests the fading of the moon at the sun’s arrival.
