'Artichoke' design

Morris & Co.c.1880-1910

William Morris Gallery
Walthamstow, London, United Kingdom

This watercolour design, most likely for a rug, consists of a vertically symmetrical artichoke pattern. The artichoke was one of Morris's favourite motifs, used in a carpet designed in 1875-80 and a set of embroidered hangings designed in 1877. This design also features stylised tulips and daisies.

Morris designed both hand- and machine-made carpets and other floor coverings. In the 1920s and '30s, many years after his death, rug kits were sold through Morris & Co., enabling clients to create their own hooked rugs to pre-printed designs.
