The art world of the day was marked by complex relationships between artists, the public and the authorities. Artists contributed to debates on political and other topical issues through humorous and satirical cartoons. In the 1920s and the 1930s, art and culture were still predominantly male realms. One of a small number of professional female artists was Erna von Brinckmann, a Baltic German painter and printmaker who depicted relations between artists in a series of cartoons.
