This souvenir card features a painting by Oriana Day of Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, also known as Mission Carmel. According to the caption on the reverse of the image, the painting shows the mission "as it was in its most flourishing condition, from plans and drawings in the possession of General M. G. Vallejo, and painted under his supervision." The caption goes on to state "The procession represents Father Junipero Serra, accompanied by a Franciscan Friar, Catalan Guards, and Cuera (or leather coated soldiers, who were armored, as were their horses, with leather as a protection against Indian arrows) and supplies, starting out to found a new Mission."
