İstanbul, Türkiye

Wheel-made aryballos with a thick disk
shaped rim, short narrow neck, spherical
body and flat base. A short handle joins
the rim to the shoulder. The vessel has
painted decoration in dark red over cream
coloured slip consisting of a row of dots
around the edge of the rim and a row of
tongues on the shoulder. On the body
is a figural scene in Orientalizing style,
at the centre of which are two antithetic
peacocks flanking a swan. The bird
figures are outlined with incised lines.
Empty spaces in the scene are decorated
with rosettes and dots. This type of
spherical aryballos was popular during
the Corinthian Period (see Akurgal, M.
1997, pp. 45-51).
