The theme in the foreground interrupts perspective, granting it rhythm – a characteristic that is common in Vaz's painting – the vertical and agressive elements being the leaves. The presence of this element in the foreground replaces the sense of place with an emblematic and southerly mood, an aspect considered by João Vaz.
