Asian elephant

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt
Frankfurt am Main, Germany

With a height of up to three meters and a weight of approx. 4,000 kilograms, the Asiatic Elephant is slightly smaller and lighter than its African relative. It can also be distinguished from the latter by the its smaller ears, a smoother skin, a dome-shaped skullcap and only one single prehensile “finger” at the tip of the trunk. While Asiatic Elephant bulls possess well-developed tusks, the cows usually do not show any, or at best poorly developed tusks. In African Elephants, by contrast, the females also carry a set of obvious tusks.
