The Summa 19 was released in 1969-70, when electronics had already taken over even among calculating machines. With this machine, Olivetti tried to prolong the survival of mechanics by focusing on the simplicity and reliability of the machine, and above all on the innovative colorful design by Ettore Sottsass jr. and Hans von Klier. The two designers tried to follow the same path already taken with the Valentine typewriter: that is, to give a professional product the appearance of a toy, according to the principles of pop-art. In 1970, the Summa 19 won the Compasso d'Oro award.
