This large painting represents the Virgin Mary being taken to Heaven by a multitude of angels, and her crowning by the Most Holy Trinity. It is a grandiose composition filled with rhythm and dynamism, typical of the Portuguese baroque. The other painting, pair of this one, represents the Death of the Virgin, and it's located in the opposite wall. At the beginning of the 20th century both paintings had been removed and later displayed in the Museu de São Roque.
