Astronomical Clock

National Museums Liverpool

National Museums Liverpool
United Kingdom

Astronomical table clock housed in a four-sided mahogany case, made by Thomas Barry and James Moorcroft in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England in 1787. Three sides have dials showing the phases of the moon, the date and the movements of the stars. The fourth side reveals the clock movement. The clock is a perfect combination of science and craftsmanship - even playing music, with a special tune for Sundays. It is one of two surviving from only six by local clockmaker Thomas Barry. It is the finest made in the Merseyside area, then the world centre of clock making.
