The first sonnet in the most important early manuscript of Sir Philip Sidney's Astrophil and Stella. Sidney wrote this sonnet sequence, a defining work of Elizabethan English love poetry, in the 1580s. This manuscript was written for or by Sir Edward Dymoke, who met and exchanged verses with William Fowler in Padua in 1591 or 1592. It was donated to Edinburgh University Library by William Drummond of Hawthornden, who may have acquired it through family connections.
