One of the earliest academic realists trained at Sir J.J School of Art at Mumbai (the then Bombay), Pestonji Bomanjee was a skillful portraitist and adept at handling the oil medium. The painting, which could possibly be a self-portrait, given the easel at the corner of the painting, shows a Parsi gentleman relaxing with a tabloid in hand. The excellent use of chiaroscuro in the painting is worth a note.
