Beginning in 1885, safety bicycles with hard rubber tires were often raced against the older high wheelers, as shown in this detail of a bookplate to a publication entitled, "Le sport velocipedique."

The safety bicycles usually won, leading to the rapid disappearance of the Ordinary bicycle after 1892.
