The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad was incorporated in 1895. For the next 130 years trains from the Topeka, Kansas based company cross the country. Only after the railway sold their last line in 1996 did they cease operation.
After the U.S. Civil War railroads expanded rapidly in Kansas. Traveling through the state on train was one of the safest and fastest ways to cross the country.
