They spend most of their lives at sea, except during the breeding season, and are native to the coasts of Iceland and northern Europe. Nests are made by digging burrows 60 to 120 centimeters deep in the undisturbed ground on islands or cliffs, and are constructed by the male using his beak and raked feet. The Atlantic Puffin's brilliant orange bill can be seen on both sexes during the breeding season, while in winter it has a dark gray, more subdued bill color.
