Michael O’Callaghan, previously Mayor of Limerick, was shot in March 1921 by British forces in front of his wife, Kate O’Callaghan. His successor as mayor, George Clancy, was also murdered on the same night. Terence MacSwiney was Mayor of Cork when he died at Brixton prison in England on 25 October 1920, the 74th day of a hunger strike. His sister Mary supported his actions. She was elected to the second Dáil and she vehemently opposed the Anglo–Irish treaty.
