Attic Amphora

VI secolo A.C.

Museo Poldi Pezzoli

Museo Poldi Pezzoli
Milano, Italy

This amphora, made of pink clay, is decorated with black paint. The principal decoration represents a scene very popular in the ceramics at that time: two fighting warriors. The picture is bounded above by a row of pendant lotus buds linked by interwoven arches.
On the other side, there is a four-horse chariot, with the charioteer standing in the middle; at the top of the scene, a row of palmettes alternates with lotus flowers.
For the quality of the decoration and the state of preservation, this amphora can be considered one of the finest pieces in the archaeological collection.
