Augusto Pereira Nobre was born on 25th June 1865 in Santa Catarina Street in Porto. He was a zoologist, university professor and the third rector of the University of Porto. During his youth, he spent countless seasons by the sea, in the Leça da Palmeira beach area (Matosinhos), experiences that may have contributed to awakening his curiosity and passion for the sea and its fauna. Effectively, having decided to embark on a scientific career, he began studying marine animals by reading at the Porto Municipal Library and carrying out zoological studies at the Porto Municipal Museum, under the guidance of João Allen. He published, for the first time at the age of 18, his Essay on the marine testaceous molluscs observed between Espinho and Póvoa, in the 1st volume of the magazine A Mocidade de Hoje, published in 1882. His university career took him first to the University of Coimbra, then to the Polytechnic Academy of Porto, and finally to Paris.
Augusto Nobre was an assistant professor of botany and zoology, an integral naturalist at the Polytechnic Academy and a professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. He was also the founder of the Rio Ave Aquaculture Station, the Zoology Museum, the Zoology Institute and the Maritime Zoology Station.
He died in the early hours of 13th September 1946 at his home in Foz do Douro.
