The manuscript with the collected letters of the church father Augustine begins with a historiated initial showing the bishop of Hippo at a desk with an open book (fol. 1r). The saint is depicted reading rather than writing, as he is pointing towards the book rather than holding a pen.
For stylistic reasons and on the basis of the watermarks of the paper used, the manuscript must have been written in the vicinity of Mainz in the second quarter of the 15th century.
