Autumn landscape with lake and mountains

This pair of hanging scrolls consists of a painting of the autumn landscape by Kaioku and an accompanying painting of the spring landscape by Hine Taizan. At the age of 67, Taizan started to study calligraphy under Kaioku.
Signiture “Kaioku” indicates that it was painted before he turned 72 years of age. While Kaioku’s painting is composed to emphasize the high sky of autumn, Taizan’s has a lower point of view in order to express the spring wind mildly blowing the willow trees.
In the inscribed poem, Taizan used the same characters as Kaioku’s poem, for the last ones in the first, second, and the last lines: sky 空, copper 銅, and wind 風. Taizan’s writing on this work shows a great influence of Kaioku. Responding to his master’s neat writing, Taizan’s script is a little more cursive to express the relaxing, warm and mild atmosphere of spring.
