This piece was crafted by the artist when she was 84 years old based on the painting and calligraphy by Li Shan (1686-1762 AD), one of the well-known painters of the “Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou”.
Just as stated in the inscribed poem that “Twitter of an insect sounding like looms rose when the night befell, before long the same sound came from somewhere else. I tried to find it in the courtyard the following morning but failed, the twitter was heard again when the night returned”, insects, though having a short lifetime, fulfill their duties and responsibilities scrupulously, thus becoming an important subject in the Chinese artistic creation that brings pleasure and enjoyment to people. With this embroidery piece, the artisan would like to express her own belief that man should also sticks to their duties and responsivities instead of idling away the precious moments of life.
With flexible use of a series of embroidery techniques, this exquisite embroidery piece not only shows the vividness of autumn plants and agility of insects, but also successfully combines dense and light ink strokes.
