Autumn Scene

Inness made this painting during a stay in a studio in North Conway, New Hampshire, in the White Mountains. He used the brown and green pigments that often appear in Barbizon landscapes, fresh in his mind after five years spent in Europe. This painting shows his interest in capturing the spiritual impression of nature rather than the visual details of natural objects.
