Santa Monica, United States

A bird's-eye-view of Avalon Bay and the mountains northeast of the bay. A ship, possibly owned by the Grace Line subsidiary called the New York & Pacific Steamship Co., is cruising away from the pier. Anchored in the bay are a variety of other rowboats, sailboats and vessels, including a tourist venue with the signage, "Floating Palace." The largest building west of the pier is on the site of the Hotel Metropole. Several rows of beachgoer and tourist tents are in the foreground. Photograph inscribed (handwritten): "Tom Vandergrift."
