Great Ruffins, Wickham Bishops, near Witham, Essex was designed by Mackmurdo for personal residence. Building work began in 1904. For financial reasons Mackmurdo never occupied the house on completion and lived instead at Little Ruffins which he also designed, initially for his brother-in-law, Geoffrey Carte. In later years Mackmurdo lived at Mackmurdo's, a cottage again built to his own design.
