THE BIRTHPLACE OF MANY OF LONDON'S FAMOUS BUILDINGS.
Portland Stone has been quarried for and exported for many centuries and in recent years the demand has been very great and the Isle of Portland is now a scene of great activity both in the quarries and masonry works. Regent Street and St. Paul's Cathedral are examples of the use of this stone. A team of six horses are used for hauling the stone in 35 ton load over the narrow quarry roadways.
Photo shows- A thirty five ton load. The six man horses pulling five trucks each containing seven tons of Portland stone at the famous quarries in the Isle of Portland.
