This image shows people from the Awajun indigenous community living in the Alto Mayo region of Peru (Peruvian Amazon). It nicely illustrates how men and woman wear different accessories. Men for example always wear headdresses while women do not.
The small house (maloca) is built with large openings in order to connect the internal environment with the external living network of the forest. The family members are eating Yuca, a tuber of the Amazon, an omnipresent and very popular dish in the Amazon.
The women, called Nuwas, are responsible for the orchards and the production of carbohydrates in the community diet, whereas the men collect animal proteins by means of hunting and fishing.
