In the Upper Paleolithic period, techniques and the bases and materials used for making tools for different activities became more diverse. This led to greater specialization, meaning that humans had several different tools that could be used for different activities. The use of bone and antler as materials from which to make a wide variety of objects also became widespread. Bone awls are usually smooth with a pointed end. They are used for piercing soft materials such as hide which, together with the existence of other items such as needles, indicates a greater degree of refinement in the production of clothing.
