In Luristan, the central mountainous region of western Iran, the bronze culture flourished from 1000 to 600 BC. Superb bronze weapons, kitchenware and jewellery were placed with the dead as burial gifts. Luristan bronzes are characterised inter alia by their stylised animal motifs. This typical sickle axe from Luristan consists of a bronze axe-head and an iron blade. On the axe-head lies the figure of a lion with its tail curled upwards.
