Ayasofyada Sabah Ezanı/Morning Prayer at Hagia Sophia

Koleksiyon’daki “Chevket 1928” imzalı Ayasofya’da Sabah Ezanı tablosunda imzanın hemen üzerindeki palet, imzayla aynı renkteki fırçayla, özenle işlenmiştir. Bu yapıt, Ayasofya’ya her bakımdan “içten” bir bakıştır. Ressam gerek Bizans, gerek Osmanlı için büyük önem taşıyan bu eşsiz mabedin, içine adım atan herkeste bıraktığı hayranlık ve saygı uyandıran atmosferini başarıyla vermiştir. Dağ, Ayasofya iç mekânını içinde sessizce ibadet eden figürle birlikte betimler, figürlerin varlığı ya da hareketi ilk bakışta fark edilmeyecek derecede ikinci plandadır, giysileri onların din adamı olduklarına işarete eder.
Kompozisyonda mekânın kendisi tüm ululuğuyla izleyiciyi içine alır, muazzam kubbesi görüş dışında olsa da duyumsanır. Üst pencerelerden sızan ışık demetlerinin ustaca verilişiyle, pek uzun zincirlerle asılı dev kandillerle, görkemli sütunların ve yapıya Sultan Abdülmecid dönemi katkılarından olan 7,5 m çapındaki yeşil üzerine altın rengi dairesel yazı levhalarının yalnızca alt kısımlarının görünüşüyle yükseklik algısı sağlanır. Yer yer ışıkla adeta dalgalanan duvarlardan ve yerleri kaplayan halılardan yansıyan sıcak renk tonları tüm kompozisyona egemendir.

In the collection, the painting titled Morning Call to Prayer in Hagia Sophia signed “Chevket 1928” features a palette carefully rendered just above the signature with a brush of the same color as the signature. This work offers an “inside” view of Hagia Sophia in every sense. The artist successfully conveys the atmosphere of awe and reverence inspired in everyone who steps inside this unique temple, which holds great significance both for the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. Dağ depicts the interior of Hagia Sophia quietly worshipped by a figure, whose presence and movement are so subtle they might not be noticed at first glance; their clothing indicates they are a clergyman.

In the composition, the space itself embraces the viewer with all its grandeur. Although the magnificent dome is out of sight, its presence is felt. The masterful depiction of light beams filtering through the upper windows, the enormous lamps suspended by very long chains, the majestic columns, and the partial view of the circular calligraphy plaques—7.5 meters in diameter in green with golden lettering, additions from the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid—all contribute to a sense of height. Warm color tones reflected from the walls that seem to ripple with light and from the carpets covering the floors dominate the entire composition.
