Aymara mummy of a male individual

Museu Nacional

Museu Nacional
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Lake Titicaca, Andean region between Peru and Bolivia. Funeral bundle involving a dead man between 30 and 40 years old. According to Aymara tradition, the dead man was dressed, sitting with his knees by his chin and tied. Then a basket was wrapped around the body, leaving only the face and the tips of the feet. Personal objects could also be placed inside the bale. In the case of this mummy, your skull is exposed because the upper part of the head did not hold well. The elongated shape of the skull results from a purposive deformation, a common practice among the Andean peoples, probably performed for aesthetic or religious reasons, or to signal distinction.
