Spears have been known since the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic, when the use of bone and antler became widespread. They were used by Homo Sapiens as a hunting weapon. They are very lightweight and made of antlers, and one or both ends may be sharpened. They were attached to the end of a shaft that was thrown with the hand or a spear-thrower like a javelin. Their shapes are varied and they can be decorated with marks and engravings. These different shapes and decorations allow us to date them somewhat accurately.
