Azimuth Notebook for Viking Lander 1 SOL1: The next few iamges cover a combination fo Lander systems and soil sampling surveys to determine the readiness and states of various Lander systems including the soil sampler arm and the meteorology boom, both of which were flown in a retracted state. The deployment of the meteorology boom was successful however the first attempt to deploy the soil sampler arm was impeded, and it took engineers at Martin Marietta to determine that a sequence had been changed that prevented the arm from extending completely in order to drop the pin that locked the protective shroud covering over the soil sampler scoop. Once this was determined to be the likely culprit, the test Lander at JPL was used to confirm, and the proper sequence was uploaded and the arm released as planned.
