This painting was exhibited as "A fresh gale, with a view of the Pierced Island, a remarkable rock in the Gulph of St. Laurence" at the Free Society of Artists, London, 1763, catalogue number 220. The painting was acquired for the ROM not because of these touristic connotations of the 1760s, but because of its associations with military history.
