This print depicts the Babi Yar massacre, one of the largest and most brutal mass killings carried out during the Holocaust. More than 33,000 Jews-a large portion of the remaining Jewish population in Kiev, capital of the Soviet Ukraine at the time-were murdered by German police units and their auxiliaries under the Einsatzgruppen at the Babi Yar ravine over two days in September 1941. The print is directly related to an earlier painting of the subject dated 1944.
