Young children, though popular and much-adored as subjects, were often difficult to keep still during the exposures required to record them. As this daguerreotype demonstrates, it was not uncommon for adults to maneuver their own poses to provide direction, reassurance and, in some instances, physical restraint to ensure some degree of success from the portrait session.
