The Carpeaux style was natural, emotionally charged, and radiated unprecedented freedom. It was sharply criticized by those in favour of dominant, more traditional views. The chiaroscuro he used influenced many subsequent sculptors, including the young Auguste Rodin (1840–1917). The bust of bacchante was a great success and was created in many variations.
