This portrait is one of the many friendship album prints engraved by Göttingen university engraver Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen. Friendship albums were very popular among students, who used them to collect handwritten entries by their fellow students, lecturers and friends. In the late-18th century, 'friendhip album sets' came into vogue — boxes in which loose prints like this portrait were kept.
