An iconic dive site in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the Christ of the Abyss statue attracts a lot of tourist attention as well as marine life. There are three Christ of the Abyss statues currently residing beneath the surface of the sea. The original in Italy, a replica in Grenada, and this example in Florida. This Christ of the Abyss statue is the most recent of the three, and was placed here in 1965. The statue lies in about 8 metres (26 ft.) of water and is secured to concrete on the ocean floor. The statue, which is made of bronze, is slowly but surely being colonized by encrusting coral, sea fans, and other marine creatures. It is becoming a part of the nearby coral reef.
