Valamugil engeli - back

Leiden, Netherlands

This is a resident of the sandy grounds of coral reefs in the western Pacific near Indonesia. The species is named after one of the illustrators in service of Pieter Bleeker (1819 - 1878). Bleeker was a Dutch physician and fish expert, famous for his research on fish in East Asia. He wanted to produce the first big fish atlas of this area. He was very critical of the drawings made by his artists. It was said that he checked every single scale.

The original 'Bleeker jar' has been replaced by a jar with a screw lid. Unfortunately it has lost the original label from the sales catalog.
