Tartan lounge suit worn by the Duke of Windsor back

This lounge suit was made in about 1897 for George V, and then inherited by his son the Duke of Windsor (Edward VIII).

Made with Rothesay Hunting Tartan in forest green, deep red, and pale yellow it was altered by Edward to suit his taste, and later fashion styles. He discussed these alterations in his book 'A Family Album' (1960) which contains extensive discussion on fashions in clothing both within the royal family, the royal court and in wider society including the USA.

The alterations to the suit saw the neckline, originally styled higher with three buttons in a Late Victorian style, made deeper, with just two buttons.. The unused buttonhole can still be seen on the lapel. The jacket was relined with deep green satin rayon and a more modern zipper fly replaced the original button fly in the trousers
